Frequently Asked Questions
Q - What is meditation and what is mindfulness?
A - Meditation is a practice that helps us to calm the mind and encourage mental clarity and relaxation. Mindfulness helps us to become aware of what is happening around us or how our bodies feel in the present moment. Whilst they are different, they go hand in hand because they both aim to help our well-being by helping to reduce stress and anxiety, encourage resilience, focus and general wellbeing.
Q - What are the benefits of meditation and mindfulness?
A - The benefits of meditation and mindfulness are vast and profound. Benefits range from, mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Please see our “Research and Benefits” page for more information.
Q - I can’t switch off my thoughts, does this mean meditation isn’t for me?
A - You don’t have to stop your thoughts in order to meditate. This is a common myth and it does not mean meditation isn’t for you. In fact, some of the most valuable parts of meditation come when you notice that you’ve been distracted. I am able to teach more about this in my classes.
Q - What if I can’t visualise anything? Can I still meditate?
A - Around 1-3% of the population have aphantasia - the inability to visualise any type of image in your head. This doesn’t mean meditation isn’t for you. There are many different forms of meditation that don’t include visualisation. I am able to teach more about, and work alongside anyone with aphantasia in my classes.
Q - I don’t have hours free every day to meditate. If I am coming to one class a week is this enough to gain benefits?
A - Yes! Whilst you will gain more from regular practice, you can still experience benefits from weekly classes. Most of my sessions run for 45 minutes and include meditations and discussions. We talk about challenges and find ways to bring meditation into your daily life (if this is something you are hoping to do). Even 5 minutes a day of meditation or mindfulness can be effective.
Q - What age do you need to be to practice meditation and mindfulness?
A - Meditation and mindfulness is for all ages, abilities, genders, religions, races, etc. I am able to work alongside babies, children and teens right up until end of life with everything in between, however my one-on-ones are for 18 and above only.
Q - Why is it beneficial for me to come to a session rather than using something like YouTube?
A - While platforms like YouTube offer valuable resources, nothing quite matches the efficacy of in-person sessions when it comes to meditation or mindfulness. In these sessions, you not only receive guidance through each stage of your practice, but you also create a personal connection with your teacher. This helps me to be able to create tailored programs to ensure your specific needs are addressed. The interactive nature of face-to-face sessions fosters exploration, enabling us to discover what resonates with you and what doesn't. With the added support, you can further enrich your home practice, if this is something you are wanting to do.
Q - Do I have to follow a certain religion to practice meditation or mindfulness?
A - No. Whilst meditation and mindfulness is used in some religions, there is no requirement to follow a certain religion to partake in these practices. My sessions are not designed around any particular religious beliefs and everyone is welcome.
Q - Do I have to have my eyes closed when practicing meditation or mindfulness?
A - No, you can practice meditation and mindfulness with your eyes open or closed. It may feel easier to move in to a meditative state with your eyes closed, however if you are more comfortable keeping them open, this is completely o.k.
Q - I am nervous about coming to a session. What if I laugh or cry? What should I expect?
A - It is completely normal to feel a range of emotions in the lead up to a meditation and mindfulness session. You may feel excited, nervous, calm, uneasy, self-conscious etc. All of these feelings are ok and sessions are run in a way that are warm, supportive and welcoming. I also have a small number of spaces available for one on one session if this is more your style. Laughing, crying, tummies rumbling, deep breathing, and many other actions and sounds are normal during meditation and mindfulness and are even welcomed in my sessions! We are all human and EverZen is a safe space to process and feel your thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement.
